Drupal 12 Release Date, Roadmap, and What to Expect

According to the official schedule, Drupal 12.0.0 is scheduled for the week of December 7, 2026. Drupal follows a steady release cycle, with a new major release every two years and minor releases approximately every six months. Meanwhile, Drupal 10 will reach end-of-life on December 9, 2026.

In terms of changes, Drupal 12 will update its core dependencies. Current indications point to PHP 8.5 as the minimum requirement, while newer requirements for PostgreSQL and MariaDB are expected. Code marked as deprecated in Drupal 11 will be removed, so any custom modules that use it will need to be updated. The Recipes API, which is still experimental, is expected to be stabilized in a later 11.x release or in Drupal 12. The transition from 11 to 12 will be much smoother than previous upgrades, provided the site is updated regularly.

To prepare, we recommend keeping your site on the latest version of Drupal 11, checking for deprecated code using Upgrade Status and Drupal Rector, confirming the compatibility of contributed modules, and reviewing your own code. Those still on Drupal 10 should upgrade to version 11 immediately. Finally, several features are being developed outside the core as part of the Drupal CMS initiative. Examples include Drupal Canvas, the successor to Layout Builder with built-in AI chat, and the Drupal AI ecosystem.
